You're eager to check out the latest music or go see a comedy. But the place isn't open. You're angry, you're frustrated and you have no idea what's going on. The film is a piece of hard luck. It feels ill-conceived, ill-made and ill-fitting. Sure, it delivers the goods. It's got a killer script, a first-rate cast and a bunch of sub-par plot ideas. It's just that none of these elements work together. It's not a problem of a muddled screenplay, it's a problem of muddled storytelling. This sort of muddle has become the norm in big budget movies. There is a reason that the vast majority of successful films, whether for the theater or the box office, are either reboots or sequels. People expect certain sorts of story and character developments. But the biggest problem with "The Zodiac Killer" is that it isn't a sequel to the 2007 cable mini-series "Zodiac," which starred Johnny Depp as the fictional character. The 2007 mini-series told the story of the Zodiac Killer, who at the time was a real person. In the original mini-series, the real-life Zodiac Killer was a handsome, well-off San Francisco hippie who had at least five victims. He was portrayed as a serial killer who reveled in his work, who had a connection to the Black Panthers and was part of the "Love Machine" chapter of the Manson Family. Director James Fox has gone with a different approach in his film. He has decided to make the movie a biopic, with David Schwimmer as the real-life Zodiac Killer, and he has gone for a grim tone. Schwimmer is effective in this role. He's convincing as the killer, but he's also good at portraying a man driven by the need to be loved. "I have to be loved. I have to be loved. I have to love. I have to be loved. I have to love." He's as paranoid as he is affectionate. The film has been edited down from at least three hours to two hours and 20 minutes.
